'She wouldn't survive without me there to feed her': With moving day looming, months of driveway visits become a gentle trap-and-rescue, ending with an indoor furever home for stray cat Luna

About a year and a half ago we started seeing this skinny kitten hanging around. We're in a rural area with each property having 5 ac or more, so not a suburban neighborhood or urban area. I took a couple pics and none of our neighbors claimed it.

Our area was experiencing wildfires so it was really hot and smokey. I started putting water out for the kitty and eventually started feeding it. Then I bought it a feral cat house for the winter.

I made the assumption the kitty was female and started calling her Luna. I could only get about 20 yards away from her before she would run away. Nothing I did could get her to come closer to me. But every night she would sit in the driveway and watch me snuggle with my 4 indoor cats.

I was a little afraid of trapping her. I didn't want her to get hurt and I didn't want to get bitten. I stayed up all night putting food in the trap. She wasn't heavy enough to trigger the door. Finally on the 6th time she went in to eat, it triggered. I felt terrible because, as expected, she was freaking out trying to escape. I covered the cage and left her alone hoping she'd calm down.

We had been renting and found a house to buy an hour away. I told my realtor about Luna and she was concerned she wouldn't survive without me there to feed her. She said that if I could trap her she could take her to the vet to get fixed and then release her into a feral cat colony that she was caring for.

After an hour of still thrashing, I sat down next to the cage and she immediately stopped and layed down beside me. I couldn't believe it! But, I figured she was probably just exhausted.

In rhe morning I dropped her off with my friend to go to the vet. An hour later I got a call that she was already spayed and not feral all at. She was purring nonstop once someone picked her up! My friend couldn't take her to the colony because she wouldn't do well not being feral.

We figured that she was probably a house cat that got dumped or abandoned in our area which is very common. She was not chipped and there were no lost posts about her.

So, I drove back and got her. She is now in a secure room getting acclimated to being inside again before I introduce her to my other 4 kitties. After just 2 days she started hopping onto my lap and headbutting me for pets! She is the sweetest kitty!
